Record Company / Labels

We have started to research into the Record Label that would be suitable for our genre. We believe our artist would need a well established label with a high status such as EMI or Universal. However, this would mean sacrificing more of the artist's control (than independent labels) over: the singles chosen from the album, the distribution channel for the music and the general artist image. This is because in order to finance a music video it requires a lot of backing so a bigger budget would be needed. In return for the financial backing a big record company would want control.
An independent label would not have the money available to do this and their reputation would also be weaker, this therefore can have a knock-on effect for the artist in the fact that they will recieve less publicity, have a small budget to create an interesting and eye catching music video and the independent labels seem to have less success in marketing the music on mainstream radio stations.
Record Companies like Universal and EMI tend to focus on genre based labels which would suit our artist/band.
Also, looking into the genre of the current artists signed to EMI, there are examples of indie bands like Coldplay and Arctic Mokenys which would inspire us to sign to EMI, seeing similar bands which inspired us be successful with EMI.
