Genre conventions

Conventions of genre are a compilation of cliches, stereotypes and archetypes. Most artists in the modern music industry perform a hybrid song, combining 2 or more genres into their text. Another common technique is for the artist to subvert their usual genre. For instance, Madonna is often thought of to be a blonde singer, often wearing provocative clothing. However, in Like a Prayer Madonna subverted her genre, becoming a dark haired, modestly clad and respectable woman.
An artist's work is categorized by both the artist themselves but also by fans as well as music critics. The fans are often the best at identifying a genre because it is what they follow. This makes it clear to everyone who the target audience of a particular genre is.
The genre of the artist and music is also often accredited the place of origin of the music. This is probably most visible in America with Jazz and Blues which are identified as coming from areas of ethnic minority at the time.
