Indie Dress

Indie artists are usually in their late teens to mid twenties. Their style is a mixture of independent factors that they enjoy, sometimes taking ideas from folk, punk or hiphop. Indie style is a mixture of other styles, layered to create something original with each person.
With indie dress it is all about what is worn but how it is worn that makes it indie.

There are conventions of indie. Artists tend to wear fitted solid-colour t-shirts and vintage t-shirts/hoodies and these will tend to be bright and colourful and contain slogans. Jackets are important for the colder months like vintage leather jackets and corduroy jackets. Artists also tend to wear skinny jeans or corduroy jeans. These tend to be dark colours. There are many different types of shoes that can be placed into the indie look and also customisation is a big thing on the shoe front with indie:

  • Vans
  • Nike – especially the dunks
  • Moccasins
  • Macbeth Shoes

Many people think that converse are indie style however they are not the best choice for indie footwear, as they are now very mainstream. Adding your own touch to the shoe may bring you out of that. A tip recommended if a pair for indie was wanted is to buy a coloured pair and customise.

Accessories are also an important part of the indie look. These include bracelets, wristbands, necklaces scarves and headbands. Scarves add a classy touch to the outfit. Bags are often another accessories that is not really thought about and although artists won’t have these in a performance they will use them lots when on tours or even just travelling about. Messenger bags are the most popular of the sort. Sunglasses help to add a celebrity touch and also a touch of hidden identity to hide the artist from the press and public.

There are many clothes sites dedicated to selling indie clothing. Below is a link to just one of many:

Indie Hair Styles
Most websites tend to talk about indie hairstyles in terms of women. There is very little information on men, however they tend to have a similar style.
Characteristics of indie hair include:
  • Shaggy un-kept hair
  • Bed head hair styles
  • Pixie-like styles
  • Short Hair
  • Sixties-inspired hair
