Analysis - "The Saturdays - Just Can't Get Enough"

Analysis and summary of The Saturdays in bullet point form:

  • Falls across the bubblegum pop/pop princess genres
  • The overall theme was very vintage seemingly based on the 1950s/1960s
  • The colours a style of everything in the frames is very vintage
  • There is a large variety of colour but all are pastels so do not over power the imagery

  • The clothing, or lack there of, is provocative
    • silk underwear
    • suspenders
    • generally tight clothes that enhances the figure of the artists etc.
    • flamboyant hair
  •  If they were modern styles and monochromatic tones it would possibly appear to be a 'slutty' form of dress yet some how does not come across in such a way
  • A fair percentage of the shots have the girls dressed up for stereotypically feminine roles in even more stereotypical outfits

  • The girls command the image being the subject of attention
  • They're the first thing in the shot that the eye is drawn to

  • Archetypes include sexy women bringing a sexual context to everyday activities
  • Sex appeal is quite large in scope to both sexes
    • For men/teenage boys - both beautiful and sexually attractive
    • For women/teenage girls - attractive and display a beauty some strive for (the 'I want to be like her' factor)
  • The idea of voyeurism* subverted voyeurism** heavily incorporated

* = An idea discussed by Sigmund Freud, Andrew Goodwin and Laura Mulvey. Where the imagery observes the person, usually women, without the subject seeming to notice; often in a sexual way. This suggests a (dominant) male gaze.
** = The idea of voyeurism but almost reversed. The subject is still the same but the body language and clothing denote an air of dominance over the observer. Sexually represented buy not exploited. The subject may or may not 'know' they are being watched.
