Female Lead Vocalists

I am doing some research into female singers for instance how they are incorparated in the band and what the audience thinks of this. This is because the band we have chosen (The Riot Tapes) have a female singer and I am interested to see what effect this will have on the perception of the band.

Some examples of female singers are:

- Hayley Williams (Paramore)
- Gwen Stefani (formerly of No Doubt)
- Amy Lee (Evanescence)

Here is a response to female singers within bands:
(this is only one person's view, he has started the thread)

However, here are responses given to his discussion: (they all disagree that bands with female singers are perceived as poor)

I know this is small amount of opinion, but it shows that there is a fairly positive response to bands with female singers (like our created artist). Also, these people are a good source of information and research because they obviously have a good understanding of a wide range of music and believe in their opinion enough to post a comment on this subject.

Record Company / Labels

We have started to research into the Record Label that would be suitable for our genre. We believe our artist would need a well established label with a high status such as EMI or Universal. However, this would mean sacrificing more of the artist's control (than independent labels) over: the singles chosen from the album, the distribution channel for the music and the general artist image. This is because in order to finance a music video it requires a lot of backing so a bigger budget would be needed. In return for the financial backing a big record company would want control.
An independent label would not have the money available to do this and their reputation would also be weaker, this therefore can have a knock-on effect for the artist in the fact that they will recieve less publicity, have a small budget to create an interesting and eye catching music video and the independent labels seem to have less success in marketing the music on mainstream radio stations.
Record Companies like Universal and EMI tend to focus on genre based labels which would suit our artist/band.
Also, looking into the genre of the current artists signed to EMI, there are examples of indie bands like Coldplay and Arctic Mokenys which would inspire us to sign to EMI, seeing similar bands which inspired us be successful with EMI.

General Audience Profile

Age range - 2 groups
1.   16 - 28  these will be the ones that go to the gig and by iTunes tracks but probably don't listen to the radio deliberately or much at all, though they may have heard them a couple of time on the radio at work or in the car. most likely found them either by the band supporting at  local gig or on the internet
2.   28 - 45 and potentially older  -  this group is filled with the audience that heard the band when they were younger and while not really going to gigs anymore, particularly 35/40 + margin, but have continued following them. They now get some of their music from iTunes and the internet but also by digipaks of particular singles or mini albums that they like (especially if they fall into the upper echelons of the age bracket 'defined' above). A lot though listen to the band when they appear on the radio when at work but particularly in the car when commuting as they tend to listen to the less mainstream radio stations. (local radio, radio 2, radio 6)

Gender
Their music is aimed at both sexes, male and female. The female lead singer would appeal to women as it is in some ways empowering but also gives a more 'listenable' voice. The music also appeals to both sexes but where as when there is a female singer with really upbeat pop princess music men will tend not to listen to this genre. But they will listen to this because the music is the gentle side of alt rock combined with indie rock.

Class - B middle - C1 skilled working - C2 unskilled working
These are the classes that we reckon the music would be aimed at. The reasons that it encompasses these three is due to the image of the artist but also the lyrics in the song. A lot of the lyrics are talking about a lack of money and an aspirational attitude toward other people. This is related to the lower classes because, as arrogant as it sounds, the working classes do not have the same disposable income as the higher classes. The difference between B and C1 is actually rather significant. however, the fashion statement made by the band is more commonly available to those of the middle class and to an extent C1. It is though harder for them but the fashion is often mimicked by cheaper brands. As music though the lyrics and listenability of the songs would appeal to all. it is the background of the band and the lyrics themselves that make them class specific.

Demographics
The younger fans are inclined to follow the band via internet and buying the music online. They do not buy every new technology that comes out but they like to have access to the music from the band which today, is often via iTunes. They don't spend all their time listening to music as they put work before music within the working day but they do not take work home with them. This allows for recreational time where they are usually involved with something local. For instance the local football club as an example or another kind of sport. The very young audience may go out as groups, skating and just hanging out but they are not the sort that cause havoc or vandalize property but just have fun as groups.
Buying the extra merchandise of the band is not a must but they may buy something related to a particular gig or album.
They are into fashion and will try to keep a clean tidy look. Care is taken over their look so that they dont give people the wrong impression. They will go more for the vintage image adding in individual features to make the look their own. They are likely to shop in the cheaper shops however some of their image will have a more expensive touch to it.

Song Choice

We have chosen the track 'Everythin is Local' by The Riot Tapes as out Final Track. This can be listened to in the box down the side of the blog.

We have chosen this track because of the imagery that we can get from it. Also we feel that from the artists explanation of the track it is going to be easier to create an image than the other track 'Photographs'. This is because 'Photographs' has images that are going to be difficult to create with the budget that we have and also the technology that we have available to us. It would be possible to do some of it but it would be a difficult and lengthy task and we feel that we would be pushing ourselves too much for the time that we have.

These are the lyrics:

God knows I want to go home
With a bucket for my bones
Money full of dry holes
Left everything in the back of the car
Drank everything within the hour
Played the radio.

Smoke
Words Blend
Repeat

Took the long road into the desert
Where i found a river fell beside it
Poured my head into the stream
Shouted let me start again
Men of sin where does it end
I will give you all my dream.

Smoke
Words Blend
Repeat

God knows I want to go home
With a bucket for my bones
Money full of dry holes
Left everything in the back of the car
Drank everything within the bar
Played the radio.

Smoke
Words Blend
Repeat

Artist Inspiration

Here is a list of artist/bands that inspire us with the indie genre:

- The Kooks (English acoustic based music, inspired because of their fashion/image, use of indie conventions such as black and white hue and artists shown throughout the video)
- Arctic Monkeys (use of animation and special effects in many videos such as: "Brainstorm" - general imagery portrayed in the videos)
- Razorlight - Similar reasons to 'The Kooks', jeans and general casual look
- Paramore (lead female singers - just like our song, the image seen below shows: hairstlyes, loud colours (yellow, white, red, green), indie t-shirts, hoodies, cardigan - clean crisp look, use of accessories such as scarf)

- Flyleaf (another example of female lead vocalists, the tracks are similar to those of 'Paramore' and to a lesser extent the 'Riot Tapes' (the band that have provided us with their song for coursework)
- Coldplay (another example of how special effects could be used to create a particular image for example Life in Technicolour II and also how comedy could be added to the video through the use of different props in this case the puppets.)

PARAMORE: Crushcrushcrush

This is the video of Paramore's 'crushcrushcrush' that I analyzed over the weekend. Due to the coding not working for unknown reasons in the original post I have posted it, albeit begrudgingly, in a separate post.

Personal Progress

Personal Progress

Honestly I've been a bit slow to get started this year. I'm not entirely sure why but I have. Much as with last year it took a while for me to get 'on a role' as it were. I find it much harder to be inventive and creative on the spot and to a deadline and I don't always have the enthusiasm that I perhaps should but this first month has been a beast to tackle. HOWEVER....I think I've finally managed to sort myself out and hopefully this analysis should prove this.
Despite this I realise that I still have a lot to do and probably a little to catch up on so that is what I'm going to be doing over this coming week....TRYING to get up to speed with everything.

So far I have:
  • Helped with researching music and nearly coming to a decision on that. The music we have chosen has a female lead
  • Researched into 2 genres (RnB and Indie)
  • Looked at the clothing that the Indie genre is most famed for
  • Looked at what artists fall into the genre
  • Looked at Indie/Rock bands with female leads (Paramore)(Flyleaf and Evanescence coming soon to a blog near you!)
  • Managed to acquire a willing female singer to star in the video (Emily Williamson) as well as a guitarist (Daniel Atlee) however I believe a drummer and possibly keyboard player are needed. To be looked into further.
  • Through Grace's email partly at my suggestion we have obtained the original ideas behind each of the songs we are considering by TheRiotTapes and also what images/ideals they do not want to be associated with (with their permission they seem quite happy to let us do our own thing)
  • Brainstormed a few ideas for videos in my head

Unfortunately due to technical problems I have explained prior to this I have not managed to blog all of this. More frustratingly I cannot take screen grabs of frames in videos of my laptop which has been a draw back during this last video evaluation. There is though the video embedded in the evaluation.

Next 3 priorities for me are:
  1. Posting all the research I have as of yet not been able to
  2. Make sure I am up to date with present research and that I am not falling behind
  3. Go through as a group and define our target audience, that we may be able to do and finish the audience profiling more accurately and soon.

Music Video Analysis

I chose to analyse this video primarily because the lead singer is female, as with the band we have chosen, and because I particularly want to look at how the female artist is represented in different videos. The music itself is not the fairest representation of the music we intend to use but some of the ideals and aspects of the band are near identical. This is a punk/rock/alt rock genre song where as ours is indie/indie rock/alt. rock band from Ireland – Dublin.

PARAMORE : crushcrushcrush
QuickBio(sourced from wikipedia.org and starpulse.com)
Formed in 2002 in Franklin, Tennessee when the lead singer, Hayley Williams was only 13 the 'soon to be' Paramore consisted of a 5 members; lead singer, lead guitarist/vocal backing, rhythm guitarist, bass guitarist and drummer. Signed a year later with a music management company, 'The Agency Group' and toured primarily in the south east. Later signed with bigger American labels Atlantic Records and Fueled by Ramen. Shortly after this Jeremy Davis, the bassist dropped out for personal reasons but was later replaced by another, John Henbree. This lasted 5 months of 2005 before Jeremy Davis returned to the band and they spent until October 2006 touring touring the US before coming to the UK in October. Then in 2007 Hunter Lamb left the group to be married so Paramore continued as a quartet. In ''07 they took on Taylor York as the new rhythm guitarist as Hunter had left the shortly before. This video 'Crushcrushcrush' was not the first video they made and was released in November 2007. They went on two more tours (UK and USA) before playing in Ireland for the first time in Dublin in May ''08. One thing that all the videos try to get away from is Paramore being portrayed as Hayley and some musicians but rather it is Paramore the group. Being a female front singer voted Shockwaves NME Awards 2009 Sexiest Female it has been very easy for people and the music magazines to get caught up with H. Williams, which she resents.

Mise en scene -- Set, Prop
The entire video is based in a desert; amps are prominent feature in most wide angle shots; dead trees in the arid desert back drop, dark clouds on the horizon but the sun hangs high above; candlestick, bathtub, lamps, curtains... this was the set was set-up as a house though everything is free standing. To begin with the backdrop is quite light coloured, blues and greys to begin with, representational of how life begins-innocent and bearable. However as the video progresses more fiery colours are used as a backing for the performance, orange and yellow hues of the sun envelop the entire set. This combination of light calming colours going to a fiery background and the dark clothing portrays a sense of sombre honesty building to a dramatic, angry but also controlled finale.
Mise en scene -- Clothing, Personal Prop
The band and singer are all wearing dark clothing; each band member has a direct prop/instrument as related to the music -- drummer, drums-guitarists guitars-singer,mic. The dress code of the individual performers is similar in that they are all wearing dark if not black outer garments. However, the lead singer (Hayley) is wearing a dark blue outfit. As well as this the lead guitarist (Josh Farro) is in a shirt and tie but it is a skinny tie, representing informal but not relaxed as a style.

The Song -- Musically -- Lyrically -- What Mood/Atmosphere do they Portray
Lyrically – Bond/Die Another Day Theme-esque; vocabulary dictates a theme of lies and spies “they taped over your mouth, scribbled out the truth with their lies, you little spies” -- conveys betrayal by friends and the perversities that enemies will go to to hide the truth from people. connections to media institutions that don't tell things how they are but how they want them to be viewed. the idea that media has the power to control peoples thoughts e.g. paparazzi's (“little spies”) job is to harass and obtain incriminating photos of celebrities and proceed to spin the truth to make it something untrue but what they want people to think. in government aka ''spin doctors''. The name of the song crushcrushcrush is lyrical metaphor of how such lies can effect people - it can crush their image, reputation, self respect, dignity to the point that they become recluse from society, also lyrically represented in this song by “nothing compares to a quiet evening alone”. But also that it nearly never happens so no matter how hard you try to avoid media and people who want to harm your rep/life, it is near impossible when you're famous, “that never happens” However at the very start the singer says “I've got a lot to say to you” which in context of the rest of the song is the singer trying to help someone who has been repressed and censored by ''the man'' whether that be media, government or authority in general.
Musically – steady build up. Bond: DAD-esque, denotes to me: dispair, rebelion, uprising, revenge, confidence, revelations, dramatic side of espionage (BOND THEME AGAIN)

Camera Work -- Shots -- Effects -- Editing
Primarily and most importantly, because its the most prominent feature of 'Crushcrushcrush', it MUST be noted that around 50% of the shots included in this video incorporate movement of the camera in one or multiple planes as well as zooming techniques. Whether that it done using a zoom feature on the camera or by tracking the camera toward or away from the subject I can not say. The fundamental and most used shots are close ups of the various subjects, or wide/long shots that either include the entire band or one member specifically. The close ups come in two varieties (1) of one specific member filling the majority of the frame with just desert or sky in the backdrop, or (2) that of a specific member partially filling the frame with a second in the background. This is a superb display of the rule of thirds in use. There are medium shots used though they are definitely in the minority compared to numbers of close ups and long shots. There are many worm-eye-view shots (often combined with a canted angle), particularly of the guitarists but none of the lead singer. However she is nearly always met at eye level by the camera during close ups and there are no bird-eye shots bar one, of the drummer, which is very slight.
The movement of the camera that I have described is dominated by crabbing in either direction, and tracking of the band. Panning, where by the camera rotates around a subject, is also used in conjunction with the crabbing technique but not on its own. The ped technique (crabbing in the vertical plane) is also used though to a minimal extent. There are certain frames which appear to have been shot from a free-held camera as the shots is jumping around. This is either a filming effect of one that was produced in the editing process. Shadow is used only for two shots of a trio walking in the desert, creating three silhouettes.
As regards the editing of the text, shots average .50 to 3.0 seconds in length; no more. The cuts from one scene to another, which are common place in soaps and films, don't exactly exist in this music video as everything is happening in the same location (a desert). As such many of the cuts can be classed as matched cuts and I would think, motivated cuts. Examples of each are when the camera cuts from a close up of the singer to a crabbing medium shot of her. Also when there are multiple cuts of the three guitarists, this is a good example of the matched cuts. The motivated cuts are not based on what you can see and want to see but what you can hear and what you believe you're going to hear and thus, shown. This is deeply involved with the cut rate which will be kept at a certain number for cuts per section of music and the cutting rhythm will over-ride this, cutting with either (1) the beat of the song or (2) the lyrics.
While the jump cut (cut from one scene to the other) is, arguably, not used, cross-cuts most definitely are. When the video cuts from the performance to the story the scene its self (background, setting) doesn't change but the type of action on screen does. It is no longer a musical performance but a narrative accompanied by music.
Fade cutting is used once as far as I can tell at 1:49-1:51 minutes in the sequence which brings the lead singer into the frame in front of the guitarists and drummer. One of the best techniques that Paramore have managed to use effectively in this video is that they have used matched cutting to condense time showing the same image, objects or people in the frame but in different positions. This instantaneous change works well with the rhythm and beat of the song and add greatly to the image of the video.

Denotation/Connotation of Everything Else -- See Vocab Sheet (to your right)
Paramore is a rock/punk band originating from Tennessee, USA. They formed in 2002 at the start of high school and have been a group since they were 13/14 and now have an average age of 21 or 22. The sex appeal of the band varies from person to person but to a far greater extent than with some bands.
First of there is the 21-year-old lead singer Hayley Wiliams. Obviously she appeals to both sexes as all do but in different ways. To females of early teens to mid and possibly late 20s that are into rock she is a fashion icon and a role model. She is the USA rock chick of the decade and people want that life style. They see her as someone who's example they should follow. She does not reveal much skin so the images or not revealing but she ops for clothing that enhances her figure. It indicates she wants women to be happy with their body but not to exploit themselves as so many of today's pop princess types do. To males she is more of an object who they enjoy to watch perform and are in some ways more interested in her as a singer rather than the group and not all of these male 'fans' would watch a video for the music but rather for her. The scope of this male audience would be ranging from adolescent to 20s again. As a band and as individuals, Paramore do not seek the fans of older years but rather they and their music appeals to the younger generations.
Then there is the two guitarist Josh Farro and Jeremy Davis. Each of these are slightly different but they both hold certain sex appeal. For instance they are guitarists in a band which is what initially enthrals girls/women. They appeal to females of 14 to 25 but I would hazard a guess that they once the female audience is past 25, they may seem to some immature and foolish. This guitarist image is also what appeals to male audience though; if asked which guitar they would want to play it would be lead guitar. If you asked, 'Who would you prefer to be, Jeremy or Josh?', opinions would differ greatly. They want to be the guitarist of the band while female audiences want to be with the guitarists of the band. (These are two generalisations to illustrate a point which I can't refine at the moment.) Then there is the drummer who is usually either the most of least popular member of the band depending on the music and his attitude of stage. Zac Farro is the drummer and is also the brother of the lead guitarist. This is good in terms of sex appeal for both Zac and Josh. It makes them more desirable to women but also men in a different way. To men its 'we can be a duo, drummer and guitar' which is how many bands start.

How all this links to the varying ideas held by theorists
In my opinion one of the most important conventions that a music video should hold is that the narrative and the lyrics have to have at least some kind of link between them. I believe it should be more than a loose link however where the actions and performance of the video are highly integrated into the lyrics of the song, emphasised by Steve Archer who is of the same opinion. This is what this video has achieved spectacularly. When the singer is singing of spies if often cuts to the two men who are watching the band. This conforms to this idea of that close relationship between lyrics and video and is one of the foremost ingredients of Andrew Goodwin's theory. There is also within this theory the idea that close-ups are a necessity which Paramore holds fast too and is also shared by another theorist, John Stewart. Yet another feature of Goodwin's theory is that of voyeurism which is again shared with multiple theorists such as Laura Mulvey and Freud as well as the theory of Exhibitionism. All these point to a voyeuristic approach to female artists portraying them more as objects of sex appeal and to an extent perverting the view of the female artist (this is sometimes due to the artist deliberately portraying this image but is also sometimes due to the way the media treats the artist and represents them.) However, in this video this has been slightly subverted. Usually voyeurism involves the object being observed without their knowledge and often, in the male dominated would of media management, it is all very sexualised and provocative. However, the lead singer is singing about being spied on and while not being able to see the spies in the video, she is aware that both the audience is watching but also likely there are characters watching in the video. The song itself seems to be a statement to those that do observe her. She further subverts the archetype by being attractive but not deliberately provocative indicating much more self-control and self awareness.

Individual Progress Report

After I spent yesterday editing my music video analysis for indie genre. I am now posting about my Individual
Progress so far, during A2 Coursework.
I feel I am making good progress at the moment, although I need enhance my use of technology. During my coursework, we have been asked to keep an updated diary of our personal progress. This is on Twitter. However, I do need to post on this site more regurlarly once I have achieved something or done some more research. This is one area I can improve on.
I have done all of the following:

- Used the blog to in general to post using pictures, videos and hyperlinks (improving my use of technology)
- Opened a prezzi account, visited the tutorials and now have a good understanding of the software but yet to post anything on it individually
- Researched into the genre and conventions of indie music
- Researched into clothing/image/mise-en-scene, audience, similar artists for indie genre
- Completed 2 Music Video analysis' one on punk genre and one on our chosen genre of indie
- Different techniques used in music videos that interest me/that could be used in our coursework
- Weather report to help us manage our time more appropriately (this was successful but showed the report for parts of USA and not England)
- Researched into narrative based videos
- Together we recorded ourselves (voice recorder) having a meeting at Jonny's house discussing our change in genre, our reasons for this, album covers, similar artists, narrative and performance style videos and the different camera and editing techniques used in music videos (we currently do not have this working on the blog however)

I believe I have done okay so far I just need to use more technology and keep researching into things like audience (i.e. our audience profile). I would also try and get responses from people about the genre, conventions, their opinion of this genre, different techniques used etc through Facebook, Youtube (comments) or simply questionnaires.

  • Used voice recording technology for a group discussion on which genre of music video to use and other issues - i am still working out how to post this to the blog
  • Posted my opinion on which song i would prefer to use
There are still some things to post such as other responses from artists and also i need to do some research into the female artist/ singer to try and understand the differences between male and female artists.

Music Video Analysis - Coldplay Talk

Coldplay - Talk
Genre: Indie (Rock)

The video can be seen in better quality on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3oL0AOO_J0&videos=pDuJwRN74LU. YouTube would not allow this video to be embeded so the above video is taken from http://www.redbalcony.com/.

Introduction
Narrative: The band arrive on an unusual planet in their spaceship. While there they find a giant robot and effectively ‘wake’ him up. This video is based around the lead singer and the rest of the band is there to show them as a group. There are jump cuts from the lead singer singing to all the band exploring the planet. This video conforms with Steve Archer’s theory that ‘music videos will cut between a narrative and a performance of the song by the band to show ‘real connection’ with the music.’ However this is not completely true in this music video because the artist is performing in the narrative although there are jump cuts between him singing on his own and the band acting in the narrative.
The video attracts the audience by making the performance and action interesting and energetic. Many of their other music videos are just of the band performing and constant images of the lead singer singing so this video provides differentiation for the audience.
As the genre for this music video is indie rock (alternative rock) it is very individual to the artist and the audience. Audiences who listen to this will relate themselves to the artist.
Indie conventions show that indie followers tend to like to be fashionable like the artists. In the music video although the artists are dressed relatively plainly there is the fashion of blazers and jackets to add the smart image.

Links to other videos of the same genre: In the indie genre there are many different styles of music video. This music video is very narrative based like The Kooks ‘Naive’. Some videos are the opposite of this and contain only performances from the band for example Razorlight’s ‘Golden Touch’.
There are many indie conventions throughout the video including the black and white effect and also the camera angles which are close-ups and long shots.

Lyrics: The lyrics in this music video are suggesting that he has lost touch with his brother and that he wants contact and I think the video links with this by them going looking for his brother. However in the video he is singing to a robot – ‘Are you lost or incomplete?’ This could be signifying that because the robot is not moving there must be something wrong. In this video I think that the robot represents the ‘brother’ which they are looking for. However I got a surprise when I saw the ending because the robot eats the space ship the artists are in it which could link to the lyrics ‘I’m so scared about the future and I wanna talk to you.’ So another interpretation could be that they are searching this planet for the brother that the artist is calling out to and they come across the robot who effects their future.
Also as the lead singer is not looking at the camera but instead at the robot and it makes the audience feel for the robot and also the lead singer. The lyrics relate to the target audience because they are sending the message to the audience that you should never ignore people who are trying to be there and also sends the message that you should never stop trying to achieve what you want.
At one point he is singing 'and they're talking in a lauguage i don't speak' and this is when he is singing to the robot so on screen they have written the lyrics backwards to make it look like another language which is effective because it draws the link between the lead singer and the robot closer together.

Artist's Name: ‘Coldplay' in my opinion does not have a proper meaning for the audience but is there just so that they have a name to be known by. The band name came from a friend’s band who decided that it was too depressing as a band name. This does link in with the types of songs they sing. The band name could signify songs they sing that are not light hearted and that are broody.

Image of the Artist
The artist is trying to portray a relaxed and casual look. They are wearing duffle coats and blazer type jackets which an image which is easy for the audience to replicate. Not many full body shots are shown which is probable because the artist wants the focus on him but when there are body shots they are wearing straight leg jeans. A convention of indie is normally to wear lots of wristbands and accessories such as sunglasses but in this video they are not wearing much if at all. This could however be because they are on a planet where this is not going to be seen in their setting.
All the artists have potable instruments around their necks which signifies that music can be played anywhere and other activities can be done while carry the instruments. This could also show them to be an active group and that they like to tour and travel. This will attract the audience because they will find it unusual and also the audience if they are fans they are followers and so will follow the trends and fashion of the artist. As a big part of the indie genre is the way that the artist dresses then if they were to change this they are likely to lose respect from the audience.

The mise-en-scene plays a big part in the creation of this video. The black and white effect used throughout the video helps to create the out of space image along with the use of the root looking features on the planet. These both create the planet image.

The black and white effect is a convention of the indie genre.
The use of props such as the large torches helps to add the dark and also slightly mysterious effect to the video. The artists are on what seems to be an unknown planet and they are searching and exploring and this is why its all a bit of a mystery.
As said before the use of portable instruments adds the effect that the band are going to perform wherever they can and that they are looking to perform on this mystery planet. Also the use of a megaphone shows that the artist is going for an acoustic sound rather than an electronic sound. Also since they have no electricity supply they have use instruments do not require a mains electricity supply.

These props also connote that the artists are not heavy metal artists and although they generally use electric guitars it shows they are alternative rock artists which means they don’t play heavy metal. This is what the indie genre is. This image will help to make the artist popular because it is following the conventions of indie and so it is pleasing its audience.
These images also connect with John Stewart’s Theory of ‘the video allows more access to the performer that a stage performance can. The mise-en-scene, in particular, can be used to emphasise an aspirational lifestyle.’ This is true throughout the video as many close ups are used to make the audience feel close to the artists. Also the artists venturing into the unknown planet shows them to be active and so shows their aspirational lifestyle through this.

There is a dim backlight, created from three point lighting, throughout the video which helps to create shadows and make the setting as realistic as possible. This light is meant to create the light from the moon. On top of this there is the torch light from the torches the artists are using and this is used to light up the setting and also each other. When the robot awakes, its eyes are lit up which creates a large amount of light because of the size and height of the robot in proportion to the artists who are like a spec on the ground.

Camera Angles and Editing
The video starts with an establishing shot of space to show the audience that this video is set in space. Cuts are used to cut between different images. The next image is cuts to the inside of the space ship where the artists are seen from behind sitting down. This is the first introduction to the artist.
Theorist Andrew Goodwin says that ‘close-ups should always be included’ and throughout the video there are close ups of the facial expressions of the artists and also of the mise-en-scene. Other camera angles including a bird’s eye view of when the artists ‘rock out’ for a few seconds before getting away from the robot.

Long shots are also used throughout the video to show the setting and the artists within the setting. This helps to show that the artists are vulnerable in the setting which they are in because they are small to everything around them is fairly large.
Typical side shots of the artist are also seen throughout the video. An example of this can be seen in the image above where the robot is sitting up.

There are not too many effects used in the video and most of the cuts are jump cuts which fit in with the music. Two of the biggest effects are the computerised robot throughout the video and also the flying space ship. At the begninning when the band are getting out of the space ship the use of a smoke machine creates a dissolve effect to change the scene from looking at them to their Point of View - what they are seeing. Another effect which is used is the 3D blur effect. What i mean by this is the band put on those red and green 3D glasses that you get from the cinema and change everything into 2D so they are working in the reverse to how they work for the audience. This is the only colour added throughout the whole video.

A handheld camera effect is used when the robot is following the band and this makes the camera shake as though the robot is big and heavy. This can be seen in the video from 3.05.
Also at the end of the video the robot sends out a beam of magnetic beam which is another special effect that has been added in to draw the space ship back to the robot.

Representation
I think that the robot in the video could either represent the brother the lead singer is talking about in the track or the robot could be the danger that he is singing about when he says ‘I’m so scared about the future.’ These are the only representations apart from the band itself which has already been discussed above. The robot is represented negatively in this video through the lyrics which talk about him as not contacting his brother who has been trying to contact him for a while or in the other way of eating the artists. This video has a positive effect on young people because through the lyrics it shows not to loose contact with people because things could happen and you may never see them again – which is in the case of the artist.

Sound
In this video the sound has not been changed. This means that is it the same as the original track which is a benefit for the audience because it means that it is recognisable. Indie music videos don’t tend to add in extra sound because they want it to be the same as the airplay song so like before it is recognisable and also indie songs tend to be produced for live performances and if there was the addition of extra sounds it would be difficult to replicate on stage.

Audience Profile

Meanings of Tracks

Grace emailed The Riot Tapes for the two songs that we have narrowed the choices down to.
The image below shows the response from the band and the meanings of the songs.

Song choice

I was not in the lesson today however have spoken to Jonny and one of the things that Henry and Jonny did during the lesson was look over The Riot Tapes tracks and have narrowed the choice of tracks down to either 'Photograph' or 'Everythin is Local V2'.

After listening to both and finding the lyrics i feel that 'Photograph' is better track than 'Everythin is Local V2'. This is because it has more imagery and so there will be more images within the music video whereas 'Everythin is Local V"' only consists of three versus, the first of which is repeated last, meaning that there is less imagery available in this music video.

I have an idea of dual narrative for the track 'Photograph'. One side of the narrative would consist of the band playing and performing to the camera and the other would be of the imagery such as the artist walking down the street which links in with the lyrics. These could be interspersed with each other and cut to the pace of the music. Also the lyrics are less natural (in 'Everythin is Local V2' alot of the lyrics are about the dessert and rivers whereas 'Photographs' talks about things such as 'killing time' and this gives more of a surreal image) so more special effects could be used to make the video more interesting to the audience.

The following are the lyrics for 'Photograph':

We’re pacing through and
Killing Time
You’ve got my mind made up
Can’t feel the ground and the
Stars don’t shine
I guess I’m on the street again
We don’t speak in this thin cloud
Our open arms drive around
I can’t hear you from up there
This frequency’s unclear
Noise of nothing from nowhere
Don’t mean what you say
Doesn’t matter anyway
It’s only a photograph
Took a while to admit
Took a break for a bit
That’s not my way – hey
The grave of space
That surrounds our head
Shout out and make it stop
Not a trace
Of any step
To connect no dots were left
We cant sleep the mind’s too loud
So far gone the air has run out
I can’t see you from up here
You’re so far yet we’re too near
Help me bring us to somewhere
Don’t mean what you say
Doesn’t matter anyway
It’s only a photograph
Took a while to admit
Took a break for a bit
That’s not my way – hey

Our Genre: Analysis Of a Music Video For Indie Music (The Kooks - Ooh Laa)

The Kooks - Ooh la
Uploaded by romuxzooh. - Music videos, artist interviews, concerts and more.

The Kooks
Genre: Indie (Pop)

Introduction
Plot: The band are in Paris, the city of romance; possibly signifying love and relationships from that single image at the start. This video is primarily based around the lead singer walking around the city with his girlfriend. He is seen in scenes of happiness with his girlfriend or partner for instance the girl laughing whilst taking a picture of him.The video shows the relationship between these two people; the ups and downs of it and the fact that society doesn't appreciate her as much as he does. It also warns her about what could be seen as a 'celebrity' lifestyle and to stay the same. Alternatively, the video can be perceived as sending this same message to the audience e.g. the fans who watch the video. The video ends with the audience understanding that the girl actually dies. This explains the vintage and nostalgic feel of the video, as this is in the past and he is reflecting on her life. The following of the storyline gives the video repeatability, as the auidence may not be able to piece the plot together on the first viewing.

Audience: It attracts the (target) audience because the message from the video and song can easily be related to by the teenage audience. Also, because the genre of the song is indie, most of the audience will base some aspects of their life on the conventions of this genre. For instance: indie kids tend to be trend setters in terms of fashion and look after their image very well, they will therefore appreciate the location (Paris) because the city is renowned for it's fashion reputation. Also, because of the complex storyline that I eluded to earlier. It deals with themes that the target audience can relate to: love, loss, relationships, loneliness, not feeling appreciated.
Similar/Different Video to those in the same genre: This video is slightly different from other videos of this genre compared to Arctic Monkeys who focused on performance videos like "I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor" and Razorlight with "America". However, it does share similarities to Indie band Glasvegas, whose "Daddy's Gone" video maintains a vintage, old looking video with grainy images parallelling the the mise-en-scene within this video.
Conventions: This video is down in a black and white hue throughout, this a convention of Indie. Also, images of the artist are shown throughout for example:

Extreme Close Ups and Long Shots are used, which are generic conventions for this genre:

Song Lyrics: "The world just chewed her up, and spat her out" - No-one appreciates her but him.
"And don't be a star, it's such a drag" - Talks about society and people opinions and distorted perception (of the music industry and celebrity life/culture.

He is sending a message to the audience, this is shown by the lead singer looking at the camera as he sings these lyrics. This makes the message personal to the audience as it is coming directly from the star of the music video. These lyrics relate to the target audience because there is mention of not getting too involved in this celebrity lifestyle and the audience of this genre will be young, fashionable people. These is the demographic that are most susceptable to this sort of behaviour/ideaology. When the lead singer sings straight to the camera he is conforming to Horton and Wohl's Theory; which is the idea that fans have a parasocial relationship with the artists

Artist's Name: 'The Kooks'  - This may signify to the audience that the band is a little bit odd or different. Possibly taking reference from the word 'Kooky' which means strange or crazy. In the context of the band, this could then speak about their character, attitude or simply their music.

Image of the Artist
The image the artist is trying to portray is a casual, fashionable look that the audience can replicate. This would be the leather jacket, skinny jeans and sunglasses, complete of course with the addition of his guitar:

This will help attract the audience as many follower's of the bands music are often (if not always) influenced by the way the band dress. This shows the band's clothing and image is an integral part of the
indie genre conventions. They may lose support from fans if they started to dress emo, in all black with heavy dark eyeliner.
The mise-en-scene creates a vintage feel to the video for instance the black and white hue used along with props such the old style bicycle:

These are all generic conventions of this genre. As discussed before, the location of the video (Paris - indicated by the image of Eiffel Tower, to establish the location quickly) Props such as the acoustic guitar indicate the band are going for a pure and natural sound not to be influenced by heavy sounds of the electric guitar. This completes the image for an indie band as they cannot choose/style their own clothes and fashion religiously and then use an electric guitar. This instrument has connotations of 'cheating' the audience as the sound made by the musician isn't actually the sound heard, once it has been amplified or altered in some way. Using acoustic instruments is not necessarily a convention of indie music for instance:

Camera Angles and Editing
The video starts with numbers shown and you can hear the flickering and bleeping like it is processing the video onto the screen from an old projector of some kind. Right from the start we are introduced to the idea of vintage or possibly nostalgic video (looking back) and at the end of the video the feeling of nostalgia is justified because of its ending.  It then has 5 or so seconds worth of an introduction (before the music for the song plays) this is a sort of pre-song scenario. It is the band on a talkshow live on TV and they are spoken to in a language they can't understand, this clip demonstrates themes of humiliation and the world being against you/looking down on you. Some of these themes are demonstrated later on in the video. It could be said that this moment at the start of the video has the aesthetics of a TV commercial adhering to John Stewart's Theory.

This shot gives the video the aesthetics of a TV commercial
because of the enhanced lighting used.

Close up is used on the star's face, giving the audience
somethingextra at the start of the music video. The audience may also be familiar
with this sort of set up which helps generate intertextuality.

There is a dissolve technique used, sort of 'burning a page' technique. This is when one shot is burned through which then leaves the next shot in the sequence. The shot, once dissolving, reveals what seems to be the word 'fin', which is 'the English word finished' in French. As the dissolve technique happens at a high tempo (together with the rest of the video), the word and therefore the connotation is hard for the audience to make out. This again, gives the video the repeatability factor allowing the audience to watch it multiple times and not become disinterested.

This now connects both the narrative and the location of the video together. The french meaning is used to continue the French link/theme within the video of the location and then romance and love. The word 'finished' in modern English culture can have the meaning of death i.e. they are 'finished'.

According to Andrew Goodwin's Theory, close ups should always be included and that is exactly what has happened, they are quite frequent mostly concentrating on the artist's face(s) or their instruments. There is also an interesting shot where the artist/singer and his girlfriend are playing, this is seen through a piece of camera film, adding to the old and therfore original feel. Side shots are used, aswell but this is part of the narrative and not the performance where this shot would typically be seen.

Representation
The woman in the video can be to be both represented positively and negatively in this video. She is seen being with the lead singer, laughing, being good company and generally enjoying herself. There are a series of shots like the one through the washing machine that depicts her in the centre of the door, which could be viewed as idolising her.

Also, the lead singer is seen buying flowers from a shop, presumely for her to show his love for her. There is a crane / high angle shot used to set the feeling that she getting away and the pursuit for her continues. Alternatively, you could view it that the woman is being representatively negatively because as the lyrics suggest "She was such a good girl to me" / "The world just chewed her up, and spat her out". She has been good to him but perhaps no one else (the world doesn't seem to like her).

Voyeuristic Shot used. This idea comes from the theory of
Sigmund Freud. He suggests the viewer gains pleasure
looking at someone as a 'sexual object' (when the object is
unaware of being watched)
In one part of the video the woman is riding her bike and when the crane shot used (possibly indicating that she looked down upon) the lyrics "the world just chewed her up" are sung. Again, showing the negative representation of her. I think this representation of women is a fair reflection so young people can relate to this because you are loved by some and hated/less appreciated by others. This representation may interest viewers, therefore giving it the 'repeatability factor'. This is when the video can viewed several times and still entertain the audience.

Sound
As this band is from the indie genre, there music will be fairly live. By that, I mean they will have produced it with the intention of making the song sound good to a live audience when played in concerts. The sound is not altered at all in the video. It is not a good idea to include these extra sounds/sound effects in music videos that are not in the airplay version because again, they will be difficult to reproduce live. It also gives the audience different expectations of the song, which may mean a negative reception from fans.

Indie Research

On http://www.guardian.co.uk/ I have found questions and answers written by the 'Indie Professor'.

I have found this of interest because it gives someone else's opinions on indie and also it is interesting to see what sorts of questions people ask in reference to the indie genre. Not all the questions and answers are based on indie but many of them are.

One particular one of interest was

'Ask the indie professor: Are gender stereotypes still present in indie music?' - http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2010/sep/01/gender-stereotypes-indie-music.

This was of interest because I was unaware that there were stereotypes to music in the case of indie as a genre as it is written and produced by both males and females, however it is dominated by males (paragraph 2) and therefore it is stereotyped to males although the gap between males and females is decreasing.

Indie Dress

Indie artists are usually in their late teens to mid twenties. Their style is a mixture of independent factors that they enjoy, sometimes taking ideas from folk, punk or hiphop. Indie style is a mixture of other styles, layered to create something original with each person.
With indie dress it is all about what is worn but how it is worn that makes it indie.

There are conventions of indie. Artists tend to wear fitted solid-colour t-shirts and vintage t-shirts/hoodies and these will tend to be bright and colourful and contain slogans. Jackets are important for the colder months like vintage leather jackets and corduroy jackets. Artists also tend to wear skinny jeans or corduroy jeans. These tend to be dark colours. There are many different types of shoes that can be placed into the indie look and also customisation is a big thing on the shoe front with indie:
Above: A type of Moccasin
  • Vans
  • Nike – especially the dunks
  • Moccasins
  • Macbeth Shoes

Many people think that converse are indie style however they are not the best choice for indie footwear, as they are now very mainstream. Adding your own touch to the shoe may bring you out of that. A tip recommended if a pair for indie was wanted is to buy a coloured pair and customise.

Accessories are also an important part of the indie look. These include bracelets, wristbands, necklaces scarves and headbands. Scarves add a classy touch to the outfit. Bags are often another accessories that is not really thought about and although artists won’t have these in a performance they will use them lots when on tours or even just travelling about. Messenger bags are the most popular of the sort. Sunglasses help to add a celebrity touch and also a touch of hidden identity to hide the artist from the press and public.

There are many clothes sites dedicated to selling indie clothing. Below is a link to just one of many:

Most of the information above was gathered from http://www.wikihow.com/Dress-Indie

Indie Hair Styles
Most websites tend to talk about indie hairstyles in terms of women. There is very little information on men, however they tend to have a similar style.
Characteristics of indie hair include:
  • Shaggy un-kept hair
  • Bed head hair styles
  • Pixie-like styles
  • Short Hair
  • Sixties-inspired hair

Indie Conventions and Codes

The following has been summarised from different pages on http://www.wikipedia.org/
Indie is the term used to describe popular music, which is independent from major commercial record labels, using the internet to promote their music instead.
Internet technology allows artists to show their music to a potentially enormous audience at low cost without the need for a major recording label. The design of digital music software has helped with the discovery of new music. Websites which contain large libraries of music are the most successful. This is one way that opportunities are created for indie bands. Also newer and inexpensive recording equipment means more artists than ever before are able to make music easily and to studio-quality from their own home. Most artists have their own website as well as having a presence on sites such as Myspace.com which allows them to keep their independence. Technology such as message boards, music blogs, and social networks are also being used by independent music companies to find success in the business. The advance of computer and internet technology also allows audiences to have input into the creations by the artist by allowing them to rate a band, vote for favourite tracks and vote for favourite styles e.t.c.
Indie can be split into two sub categories Indie rock and indie pop are the most common ones. Indie rock is a genre of rock music. It has been found from early genres such as alternative rock, post-punk, and new wave. Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock. However it is difficult to tell the difference between the two just from the instruments and sounds and both genres include distorted guitar-based music. There are other forms of indie including indie dance, indietronica and indie folk music.
Examples of indie rock and pop bands include:
  • The Kooks – rock/pop
  • Coldplay – rock
  • The Killers – pop
  •  Arctic Monkeys – rock
