Band Name

After having a rethink we felt that our artist names we had come up with were not really appropriate for the track and the style of music.
We consulted our test audience who are geeky, 20-30 year olds. They came up with some of the following:
  • Rebel Alliance
  • Last Bus to Leixlip - relating to the artist being Irish
  • Achievement Unlocked
After another brainstorm we have realised that our name needs to further reflect the image of the artist and the genre. These names represent the 40s - 50s vintage image:
  • Tuesday Night Riot
  • Thursday Late Show
  • Said The Hatter (This name is based on the character from Alice in Wonderland - this would allow us to portray a quirkey colourful image. this could also link in heavily with the artist and video mise-en-scene.)

Reel Clever

Today we have discovered reel clever which we are able to use to create our storyboard and also to plan our filiming, costume e.t.c. It also allows us to use location shots and add them to the storyboard.

Meeting 2 - Storyboarding

Today we began planning our story and brought many ideas together.
We also found that the use of a white board was helpful to jot down ideas and draw diagrams.
The images below show what we wrote about but there were many more ideas than this discussed.
Jonny working on the board - orignially in red pen which is unreadable

This image shows a diagram of part of the school and
where we are thinking of filming our recording studio scenes

This image shows some of the ideas that we want to include in our music video

This image shows all the work carried out in our session today

This image shows what we are planning for the beginning of our video
- the arrows show the sequence in which we will film
This image shows an idea we had of a stationary car
with the artist sitting inside singing at the camera

Track Feedback

We played the track to the rest of our media class and the images below show the types of images they think that we could use in our music video.

Some comments on the above images are not going to be possible to create an image for as we do not have access to places like the American countryside for example. Below is a list of our favourite images:
  • Vintage radio/ car radio
  • A car - image of artist driving
  • Tuning a radio
  • Walking through town/ down a street
  • Performance in club
  • Bar scene - alone
  • Girl Close-ups
  • TV shots
  • Alone in car

Other artists responses

When were began seeking permission we sent messages to several artists. We very few responses however we did recieve a response from The Riot Tapes which are the band we have chosen to use the track from. We also recieved responses from Sink to See and Ghostlight.
Ghostlight we felt were going to be difficult to work with because they wanted to see the storyboard and agree with the ideas we have and because of our short amount of time this was just not practical.
Sink to See were another favourite and unfortunatly their response ended up in my Spam Folder so I have only just found out it was there, however now we have chosen our artist. The messages between the two bands are shown below. I have sent a response to Sink to See to appologise for not getting back to them sooner and thanking them for the permission and explaining why we have chosen another aritst.

Hello
I am an A2 media student and this year we have to make a music video for our coursework and my group would like to Ghostlights's music. However, We are usure as of yet which track. This would be for educational purposes only, however as part of our coursework we would need to post our work on youtube.
It would be good to hear from you soon,
Yours Sincerely,

Hi Grace

How did you find the band?

Can't see it being a problem but I'll need to run it past the band.

Have you bought their songs available on iTunes?

Cheers

Hi

I found the band from mp3 unsigned and also myspace. Nope I have not bought the songs because I have been online streaming and listening online and as a group we liked the music.

If you could ask the band asap and get back to me that would be great as we need to start planning our video soon and will need to look for some other music if using the music is not a possibility.

Thanks for the reply anyway

Hope to hear from you soon

Grace

Hi Grace

No buying music is becoming a thing of the past.......

Can you please give me an outline of the video and which track you want to use.

At least you had the courtesy to ask first.

So this could be good for all of us.

Cheers

Hi

If you would like us to buy your music and use it this way that's not a problem! The only reason we have not done anything like that yet is that we have only been researching artists and different music to use. We have not as of yet decided on a track or a story as we were waiting for a response. As part of our coursework we have to gain permission from the artist which is why we were writing to ask. It would be great if we could have the permission without the need to buy the music but if this is not the case then not to worry.

We are still in the process of researching music so if you would prefer for us not to use the music then we can search else where for a different artist however after trolling through hours of music online we found yours to be one of our favourites.

Hope to hear from you soon

Hi Grace

Forgot to mention. Non of your emails come with any information about what college you're at or what course you're doing. This again is essential information for a big band.

The principles for a small band are the same though.  It's just obvious that a small band is keener to be used so will say yes to anything.......even giving their mothers away..........

Hope this helps

Hi

I am currently at sixth form at Newport Free Grammar School in Essex and i am studying Media Studies which is what we have to create a music video for.

Thanks for all the information you have supplied. I will have to consult my group on all of this and get back to you when i can. The reason as said before that we haven’t chosen a song yet and begun planning the video is because we have a limited amount of time and so have to have a secure artist before we begin this process as we have limited time and our coursework must be finsished by Christmas.
However, I understand what you are saying.
Hope to hear from you soon

Hi Grace

Ok I'm glad you understand the principles. Yes you can use Ghostlights music for a 'student' project provided we see the story board first.

I don't want the music used for images that the band do not support. I'm not talking about the odd shot here, but the story and images in general.

This is common practice.  To be honest, at this level, for you and the band, you'd have been better off just doing it, as no one would ever know.

But as you're learning.............you may as well do it properly.

Then next time you'll be able to get Radiohead's music!

Talk soon

Thanks very much and that is no problem. I will get back to you once i have consulted the group.

As i said before as part of the coursework we have to get permission so we contacted you not realising that the band was signed as we found them on mp3unsigned.com.

Anyway thanks and be in contact soon

Hi

Thanks for the opportunity to use your music however since we are limited on time we are going to go with another artist. It is a requirement of our coursework to ask permission from the artist. We greatly appreciate your offer but it’s not going to be easy for us to send your our storyboard and work as we work on the project.

Thanks Once again

Grace

Audience research - Radio stations

There are very few radio stations that I have been able to find which play indie music the in UK.
BBC's 6 Music is one radio station which plays indie music. The viewing figures are displayed in the image below.

Audience figures from http://www.mediauk.com/radio/rajar/316/bbc-6-music
Another UK radio station where indie is sometimes played is on radio 1 during the Huw Stephens' shows - for example The Neat Session (a link to this cannot be given or to any other show due to iplayer only allowing radio programmes to stay online for 7 days.) Information about him and his shows can be found on the BBC Website. His shows are part The 10 Hour Takeover on Radio 1. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bbc_radio_1#The_10_Hour_Takeover
Radio 1 has many listeners with 7 million aged 16-25.

It was interesting to find out that there are dedicated channels to indie in other countries such as the US. The list below shows where else in the world and on what channels indie can be listened to.
Channels include:
  • CBC radio 3
  • Indie 1031 - LA
  • FM 101 - Hongkong
  • Folk radio - UK
These findings are important as they give me a better idea of how many people listen to the radio station that plays our genre and therefore how many people listen to the genre, which gives a better idea of those who would enjoy our video.
